המיון נעשה לפי פיתקאות משנת 1980. במקרה של ספקות בהגדרה, נא לבדוק את הסלע, ואם יהיה מקום לתיקון, נא לרשום בהערות למטה ויבוצע העדכון בדץ. מבוא כללי לערכה הגיאולוגית האוניברסיטה הפתוחה - ערכה גיאולוגית משמש את לומדי הגאולוגיה להכרת הסלעים העיקריים. הנגישות לסלע מאפשר ללומד לעמוד את התכונות, אשר הכרתם יאפשר לו להגדיר סלע הנמצא בשדה. העקרון המנחה הוא ללקט חלקים קטנים של הסלעים הנפוצים. רק סלע אשר ניתן לשער כי היה במקום בעבר IN-SITO יהיה נושא לבדיקה, שכן חשוב לדעת מה סביבת היווצרות של הסלע. ככלל אין ללקט מאובנים.

המגשים שימשו את תלמידי הגאולוגיה באוניברסיטה הפתוחה מבוא למדע כדור הארץ (קורס ראשון - 1980 עם 200 תלמידים !!!)
