Description
English: Quartz, Ajoite
Locality: Messina mine, Messina District, Limpopo Province, South Africa (Locality at mindat.org)
Size: 14.5 x 14.2 x 5.1 cm.
It is very uncommon to get large plates of multiple crystals of these rare included quartzes. Even from a large recent find of the last year or two (2008-2009), it is still more common to get individual points and not clusters. This plate features crystals to 5 cm, mostly undamaged, with intense scattered inclusions of the rare mineral ajoite. The effect is ghostly and beautiful, and these specimens were highly prized by collectors in the past. This is the first major new find of quantity in a long while. While I have looked for more, actively, I have not found such specimens to be had amidst the more common style of larger single points or larger points in clusters.
