Description

Pvt. Samuel Shoop (CP 904), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Private Samuel Shoop, Company F, 200th Pennsylvania volunteers, showing is amputated leg. Shoop suffered from a gunshot wound at Fort Steadman, Virginia, was admitted to the hospital on April 12th, 1865, and his leg was amputated on March 27th, 1865. He recovered well. Caption reads: “Amputation of Thigh.” Photograph by R.B. Bontecou.

History is on reverse: "Samuel Shoop. Hospital Number, 20,698. Samuel Shoop, Private, Co. F, 200th Pa. Vols., aged 24, was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, April 12th, 1865, suffering from gun shot wound of right thigh, extent of injury unknown. Wounded, March 25th, 1865, at Fort Steadman, Va. Amputation of right thigh, lower third, long anterior and short posterior flaps, on field. Amputation performed, March 27th, 1865. On admission, the condition of stump and constitutional state of patient were good. Result favorable. Patient was discharged from the U.S. service, July 5th, 1865, stump entirely healed. Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, R.B. Bontecou, Surgeon U.S. Vols., In charge.”
