Pvt. Robert Fryer (CP 1041), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private Robert Fryer, Company G, 52nd New York volunteers, shows his amputated fingers, the result of a gunshot wound on his right hand, received on March 25th, 1865, at the battle of Hatcher’s Run, Virginia. Caption reads: “Amputation of 3d 4th and 5th Metacarpals. Pvt Robt Fryer Co. G. 52 N.Y.” History is on reverse: “Robert Fryer. Robert Fryer, private, Co. G, 52d N.Y. Vols., aged 18, admitted o Harewood U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, April 5, 1865, suffering from amputation of middle ring, little finger and metacarpal bones of same, result of gunshot wound, right hand; extent of injury unknown, apparently single flap from palmar surface; on field; operator and anaesthetics unknown. Wounded at the battle of Hatcher’s Run, Va., March 25, 1865. On admission, the constitutional state of patient and condition of injured parts were good—parts granulating finely. Treatment, simple dressing; no unfavorable symptoms occurred, and parts healed kindly. Patient has good use of forefinger and thumb.
