Pvt. Orison Babcock (CP 1011), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private Orison Babcock, Company G, 9th N.Y. Cavalry, shows the result of a gunshot wound to his arm on April 1st, 1865 at the battle of Southside Rail Road, Virginia. This image shows the path of the bullet. Caption reads: “Gunshot wound –flesh- of arm, course of ball show by arrow. Pvt O. Babcock Co. G. 9th N.Y. Cavy.” History is on reverse: “Orison Babcock. Hospital Number. 20,390. Orison Babcock, Private Co, G. 9th, N.Y. Cav., age 34, was admitted into Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, April 5th 1865, with gunshot flesh wound of left arm, middle third. The wound was received, April 1st, on South Side Railroad. The ball was conoidal in form, and entered the external aspect of the arm, middle third, and passing obliquely upwards beneth the superficial fascia, crossed the dorsum and lodged just below the spine of the right scapula beneath the integument, from which it was excised April 1st, 1865, on the field.
