Pvt. John Ruddy (CP 1025), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private John Ruddy, Company A, 63rd New York volunteers, shows the wound from a gun shot to his left shoulder on April 2nd, 1865 at the battle of South Side Railroad, Virginia. Contributed by R.B. Bontecou. Photographed at Harewood Hospital. Text reads: “John Ruddy. Hospital Number 20,575. John Rudd, age 32, born in Ireland, Private Co. A., 63rd N.Y. Vols., was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital from City Point April 5th, wounded by Minnie ball April 2nd 1865, at South Side Railroad. Gunshot wound of left shoulder and back, ball entering at head of humerus and making its exit about the anterior middle portion of scapula. Upon entering this Hospital the patient was much debilitated and the wound apparently much inflamed. On the 22nd of April the patient was operated upon and about four inches of the humerus excised. In the course of the operation the head of the humerus excised. In the course of the operation the head of the humerus was found to be very much shattered. Since the date of operation the patient has been regaining strength rapidly and the wound doing remarkably well. Harewood U.S.A.
