Description

Pvt. John Murphy (CP 907), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Amputation of Forearm. Pvt. John Murphy, Co. K, 37th Massachusetts Volunteers. Wounded on 6 April 1865 at the Battle of Harper's Farm, Va. Treated by Dr. Reed Bontecou at Harewood Hospital, Washington, D.C. Bound in Harewood, Vol. I.

History on verso: "John Murphy. Hospital Number, 20,918. John Murphy, Private, Co. K, 37th Mass. Vols., aged 20, was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen'l Hospital, April 29th, 1865, suffering from gun shot wound of right forearm, extent of injury unknown. Wounded, April 6th, 1865, at the battle of Harpers' Farm, Va. Amputation of right forearm, middle third, on field, by a circular incision. On admission, the stump was sloughing and patient was somewhat emaciated. Now doing well. Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, R.B. Bontecou, Surgeon U.S. Vols, In charge."
