Pvt. John Haney (CP 1193), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private John Haney, Company A, 100th Pennsylvania volunteers, who received a gunshot fracture to his left arm at the battle of Petersburg, Virginia on March 25th, 1865. The wound was treated with coldwater dressings and rest, and the patient recovered. Attended by Dr. J.C. McKee. Caption reads: “Gunshot fracture of humerus. Pvt. John Haney Co. A. 100th Pa.” History is on reverse: “Lincoln General Hospital. Washington, D.C., June 27th, 1865. Ward 7. Bed 38.—Name: John Haney, private Co. A 100th Pa. Volunteers. Admitted to Hospital March 30th, 1865, with a gunshot fracture of left humerus; wound received at the battle of Petersburgh, Va., March 25th, 1865. Ball entered four inches below acromion process passing directly backwards and inwards making its exit at external border of scapula, one inch below spine, producing a compound fracture of humerus at upper third. The treatment, adopted in this case, was to keep the patient in a recumbent position and apply coldwater dressings to the arm and shoulder.
