Description

Pvt. John G. Meiers (CP 1200), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Private John G. Meiers, Company C, 43rd New York volunteers, who received a shell wound to the right thigh at the battle of Fort Fisher, North Carolina on March 25th, 1865. The patient recovered after some time. Caption reads: “Shell wound of thigh. Pvt. Jno. G. Meiers Co. C. 43rd N.Y.”

History is on reverse: “Lincoln General Hospital. Washington, D.C., June 21st, 1865. Pavilion 5, Bed 39—Name, John G. Meiers, Private, Co. C., 43d, N.Y. Volunteers. Admitted to Hospital March 30, 1865. He received a shell wound of the right thigh at the attack on Fort Fisher, N.C., March 25, 1865. Admitted to Pavilion 5, March 31, 1865, with extensive sloughing of the wound. May 20, 1865, wound looking more healthy than it has since patient entered the ward. June 2, 1865, patient convalescing. Photographed at Lincoln General Hospital. J.C. McKee, Surgeon, U.S.A., in charge.”
