Description

Pvt. Henry Wilkins (CP 1069), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Private Henry Wilkins, Company H, 24th U.S. Infantry, shows the amputation of his left leg as the result of a gunshot wound he received on May 10th, 1864 at the battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. The wound became necrosed and the leg was amputated as treatment.

Text reads: “Henry Wilkins. Hospital Number, 12,007. Henry Wilkins, Private, Co. H, 24th U.S. Infantry, aged 25, was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, May 14th, 1864, suffering from gunshot wound of left knee joint, the ball entering at popliteal space and passing out through left condyle. Wounded, May 10th, 1864, at the battle of Spotsylvania C.H., Va. Amputation of left thigh, middle third, antero-posterior flaps. Anaesthetics sulph. aether. Operation performed by Act. Asst. Surg., D.J. Evans, U.S.A., June 8th, 1864. At the time of operation the knee joint was considerably swollen and inflamed, sinuses had formed half way up the thigh and down the leg. Constitutional state of patient very poor and irritable. Treat.: simple dressings and supporting. The patient improved somewhat after the operation and did tolerably well for awhile, but the femur becoming necrosed he suffered severely from abscesses on the stump. Every attempt to secure healthy granulation failed, the patient continued suffering with no prospect of a final recovery, remained in this condition until the month of May, 1865, when it was deemed expedient to remove the necrosed bone it having become detached. The patient was at this time considerably emaciated and feeble. He was carefully anaesthetized, and the necrosed bone about five inches in length removed by Surg. R.B. Bontecou, U.S.V. He reacted promptly after the operation, was improving in health when transferred to U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, R.B. Bontecou, Surgeon U.S. Vols., In charge.”
