Description

Pvt. Frederick Pilgrim (CP 991), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Private Frederick Pilgrim, Company D, 8th New York Cavalry, shows a wound to his right elbow sustained on April 1st, 1865, at the battle of Dinwiddie Court House, Virginia.

History (from CP 992-993): “Frederick Pilgrim. Gunshot wound of elbow joint. Resection. Erysipelas. Gangrene. Recovery. Frederick Pilgrim, private, Co. D, 8th N.Y. Cav., aged 22, was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, April 5th, 1865, suffering from gunshot wound through right elbow joint, fracturing bones. Wounded, April 1st, 1865, at the battle of Dinwiddie C.H., Va. On admission, the whole arm was considerably swollen and very painful, patient otherwise in tolerably good health. Patient did well up to May 1st, 1865, when parts became erysipelatous and highly inflamed, extending through the whole arm. Treat: cold applications and internal use of tinet. ferri chlor. The general condition of patient improved, the erysipelatous inflammation had entirely disappeared when the elbow joint was resected by Surg. R.B. Bontecou, U.S. Vols., May 5th, 1865. The wound subsequently became gangrenous with sloughing of soft parts, but by timely applications of escharotics and a supporting treatment throughout, the wound assumed a healthier aspect, granulating finely, and patient in a fair way of recovery, retaining the power to…..”
