Pvt. Frank Eastman shell wound (CP 934), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Image of Private Frank Eastman, Company D, 6th New Hampshire Volunteers, who was wounded by a shell near Petersburg, Va. on April 2, 1865. Photograph taken at Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, R.B. Bontecou, Surgeon. History appears on verso: "Frank Eastman. Frank Eastman, Private, Co. D, 6th N.R. Vols., aged 18, was admitted to the Harewood U.S.A. Gen'l Hospital, April 5th, 1865, with shell wound of the face and neck, the missile entering near the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebrae and emerging in front of the ear, right side. Wounded near Petersburg, Va., April 2d, 1865. The patient was almost entirely well when he was transferred from the hospital. He steadily improved from the first, without any apparent constitutional disturbance, wound discharging healthy pus, and granulating finely. Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, R.B. Bontecou, Surgeon U.S. Vols., In Charge." Handwritten text says: "Nov. 13, 1865: Patient suffers from deafness in the right ear, pain and dizziness. Daily discharge of matter from the mouth coming through right ear. [Illegible] unable to labor from dizziness and pain. Signed, C.H. Boynton, Pension Exam, Lisbon, N.H."
