Description

Pvt. Charles Ritter (CP 1189), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Private Charles Ritter, Private, Company B, 107th Pennsylvania volunteers, who received a gunshot wound to his head at the battle of Southside Railroad, Virginia on March 31st, 1865. He developed an infection that caused severe inflammation. Patient recovered with an altered mental state. Attended by Dr. J.C. McKee. Caption reads: “Gunshot fract. of inf. maxilla. Erysipelas ensuing. Pvt. Chas. Ritter Co. B. 107th Pa.”

History is on reverse: “Lincoln General Hospital. Washington, D.C., June 21, 1865. Pavilion 5, Bed 20—Name, Charles Ritter, Private Co. B. 107th Penn’a Volunteers. Admitted to Hospital April 4, 1865. He received a gun-shot wound of Inferior Mixillary, at the battle of South Side Rail Road, March 31, 1865. Ball entered below angle of the mouth, passed downward through the inferior maxillary, fracturing the same. Patient was attacked with Traumatic Erysipelas April 30, 1865, involving the entire scalp. May 10, 1865, inflammation gradually subsiding. May 20, 1865, patient recovered with partial insanity. Photographed at Lincoln General Hospital. J.C. McKee, Ass’t Surgeon, U.S.A., in charge.”
