Description: Private Charles Fox, Company I, 111th New York volunteers, shows the amputation of his right leg as the result of a gunshot wound he received on March 31st, 1865 at the battle of Petersburg, Virginia. The wound became gangrenous and the leg was amputated as treatment, after which the patient recovered.

History (from CP 1071): “Charles Fox. Charles Fox, private, Co. I, 111th N.Y. Vols., aged 18, admitted April 5th, 1865, to Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, suffering from gunshot wound right foot, fracturing metatarsal bone of big toe and severely injuring os. calcis. Wounded March 31, 1865, at the battle of Petersburgh, Va. On admission, the patient appeared to be considerably debilitated. The condition of inured parts, however, was tolerably good. Parts became subsesquently gangrenous, with disorganization of the ankle joint, bones necrosed and sloughing of soft parts. Sinuses had formed, extended upwards the leg. The limb was amputated at the lower third by circular method. Patient did well after the operation under simple dressing and a supporting nourishing diet throughout, and parts had nearly healed when transferred to Lincoln U.S.A. Hospital, July 10th, 1865.”
