Pvt. Calvin Van Valkenburg (CP 1190), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private Calvin Van Valkenburg, Co. I, 92st New York, shows a gunshot fracture of the skull sustained at the battle of Five Forks, Virginia. Caption reads: “Gunshot fracture of skull. Pvt. C. Van Valkenburg Co. I 91st N.Y.” History is on reverse: "Lincoln U.S. General Hospital. Washington, D.C., June 9th, 1865. Ward 9. Bed 2.—Name Calvin VanValkenburg, private, Co. I 91st N.Y. Volunteers. Admitted to Hospital April 5th, with a gunshot wound of cranium received at the battle of Hatcher’s Run (crossed out: Five Forks), Va., April 1st, 1865. Ball entered near median line, one inch above left frontal eminence comminuting the inner table of os frontis. Patient was about the ward until the morning of the 11th, suffering very little from the effects of the wound, which symptoms of compression came on in an aggravated form-pulse 43. April 11th patient was operated upon and several fragments of bone removed by the forceps. April 12th his condition was very much improved. The treatment adopted in this case was to keep the patient perfectly quiet in a recumbent position, application of pounded ice to the head and low diet. Recovery rapid—when photographed wound had nearly healed. Photographed at Lincoln General Hospital. J.C. McKee. Surgeon U.S.A., in charge. Noted in pencil: “Mr. Van Valkenburg visited the A.M.M. Aug. 6, 1889. He stated that he suffered much from constipation, otherwise health is excellent.
