Pvt. C.J. Rush (CP 1316), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Private C.J. Rush, Company E, 21st Georgia volunteers, who had both of his legs amputated at the thigh as the result of a gunshot wound received at the battle of Fort Steadman, Virginia on March 25th, 1865. The amputation was performed that same day, athe patient recovered. Rush is shown here wearing two prosthetic legs. Treated by D.W. Bliss. Photographed by D’Utassy. Caption reads: “Double amputation of thigh. With artificial limbs. Pvt. C. Rush Co. C 21st Ga.” History (from CP 1216): “C.J. Rush, Private Co. E, 21st Georgia Volunteers. Admitted to this Hospital May 17 1865, with amputation of both thighs, (middle third), the result of shell wounds received at Fort Steadman, Va., March 25, 1865. Wounds were of the following character: compound comminuted fracture upper third of left tibia, with considerable laceration of soft parts. Right knee joint was opened with great destruction of articulating surfaces. Double amputation was performed on the day of the injury. The anterior and posterior flaps being employed whilst patient was under full influence of chloroform—Both stumps healed by second intention—the case being completed at the end of two months.
