Summary
[edit]DescriptionPurple-loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) - geograph.org.uk - 1143994.jpg |
English: Purple-loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria). This plant is a native species, common in damp or marshy areas. It is shown here growing in the wet grasslands between the River Leven and the nearby cycle route; this area is occasionally flooded.
Other common path-side species in this area include 1143992 and 1143996. Pliny (the Elder) believed the ancient Greek name of this plant, Λυσιμάχ(ε)ιον, to mean "loose-strife" (i.e, "ending strife"), describing it as a potent plant "that if placed on the yoke of inharmonious oxen, will restrain their quarrelling". However, the plant's name seems, instead, to be derived from a personal name that is formed from the same elements, namely, Λυσίμαχος (Lysimachus); the true meaning would then be "Lysimachus' plant". The modern-day common name of the plant seems to be based on the same misapprehension [see the OED]. |
