| Description |
Untreated water is pumped directly from Lake Kivu, one of the African Great Lakes on the border of DR Congo and Rwanda. It is pumped into a system of hundreds of metres of pipes that stretch to Bulengo camp, which now shelters about 40,000 people who fled violence. The lake is a nearby source of water for people in the area, but it is unsafe to drink and can often lead to disease. When tens of thousands of people fled to Goma during fighting in November 2012, many families had no choice but to drink the water straight from the lake - which led to fears of a cholera outbreak.
