[edit]DescriptionPuffing Billy 3A at the Menzies Creek Museum - September 2016 - 02.jpg |
English: The last original Baldwin NA, 3A was one of two (3A and 4A) supplied in kitset form from Baldwin and was the "simple" (4A being a Vauclain Compound). This engine spent the most time on what is now the Puffing Billy railway out of all of the surviving engines, and has never been run in preservation - the engine ended up plinthed in a park before being acquired in the 1970's by Puffing Billy, where it was eventually stripped for parts. 3A is a bit of a controversial engine - there is a need for another NA class locomotive, and there are many members who want to see 3A restored to working order. Others claim the frames (the last remaining original part seen here, so I'm told - the boiler is a discarded spare from another engine, as are the wheels and possibly the cylinders) are worn out and so would require replacement - resulting in a new locomotive. I'm not sure I personally buy the "frames are worn out" argument but at the worst, it would seem 3A is destined for restoration for display purposes in its original style (which wouldn't be too hard, worn out components from the others could be used) and at best, full restoration to working order. It now resides at the Puffing Billy Railway's Menzies Creek Museum in Australia - 03/09/2016 |
