Description

An image straight from Punch Magazine to follow a Polar Expedition by hot air balloon! Peasants in rags supposedly imitating their "betters" from Mr. Mason today! Least said the better?

A fascinating discussion as usual. It is a conundrum why a Lawrence Stereo pairs image turns up in the Mason Collection, it is a surprise that the original image was staged?

We see from [/photos/scorbet/ sharon.corbet] that this photo was originally part of a Stereo Pair - see STP_0929 the catalogue reference mentions a separate caption "strip of letterpress 'Refreshment'. After Landseer (a long way!)" Which ties the stereo pair image to the one above. How or why the image is in both collections is unclear, I suppose we will never know the full story on these early collections.

We have posted the following note about the Stereo pairs collection before and I think it is apt to post it again here. The Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection was acquired by the National Library with the Lawrence Collection, though it has always been considered a separate collection as the images cover an earlier period than the main Lawrence Collection, are a different format and were not created by the Lawrence firm. The stereographic negatives in the collection were the work of Dublin photographers James Simonton and Frederick Holland Mares and were acquired, probably purchased, by John Fortune Lawrence, a brother of William Mervyn Lawrence. They were printed and marketed by William Lawrence until the popularity of stereos waned in the 1880s.

We see the following note in our catalogue on the Mason collection "Between 1880 and 1964, Thomas H. Mason, and later Thomas H. Mason & Sons Ltd., operated at 5-6 Dame St., Dublin, as opticians and photographic dealers. The slides in this collection were used to educate audiences as to places and people in Ireland's history.

The date of this photo is obviously prior to 1890, I would be interested in your comments.

Photographer: Thomas H. Mason

Collection: Mason Photographic Collection

Date: Catalogue range c.1890-1910. Likely much earlier.
