which does not afford roomfor large space games, such as baseball for example,cannot be expected to attract in any large numberthe older boys from ten upwards. For baseball asplayed with the indoor ball the bigger boys need alarge diamond with a 35 ft. base line. The girls andyounger children can use a smaller diamond with a27 ft. base line. Eight of the school playgroundshave two or more large diamonds; seven have onelarge and one small diamond; the remaining sevenhave one diamond each, most of which are of thesmaller size. At two schools, Broadway and Buhrer,the diamond laid out at each is entirely too small forsatisfactorj^ play. Physical Features.—The surfacing of the schoolgrounds is of a uniform composition: a top coatingof fine gravel, about 3, on a base of cinders, 8,limestone grit, 1, and glutrin. When maintained ingood condition, this surface is fairly satisfactory forplayground purposes. The chief difficulty is the dustfor which sprinkling with a hose a few times a day 30
