On the Temple of Heaven complex. This public toilet boasts a four-star rating, attesting to its good working order and cleanliness. But even this was not a guarantee that the toilet would be odor-free or stocked with toilet paper. These star ratings were brought in to improve the toilet experience, in preparation for the Summer Olympic Games in 2008. "Going to the loo" in China could be an adventure in itself. The only sit-down toilet I could see in all of Beijing was the one in my Holiday Inn hotel room. And toilet paper was almost unheard of, requiring me to carry my own. If I was unlucky, even a flush toilet would be too much to ask for. My tour guide told me that in older residential neighborhoods, houses would lack plumbing altogether, and residents would have to use communal toilets. Sometimes they may need to use a porta-potty at home late at night, and empty the waste at the communal toilet the next morning. I was even told that some of those communal toilets don't have privacy doors - which means as I do my business, I may end up socializing with neighbors who are doing their own business. |
