| Description |
Hong Kong Museum of History. From the 1960s on, public education was conducted in both English and Cantonese; until then, English had been the only official language in Hong Kong. Since the return to Chinese rule in 1997, Mandarin has also become Hong Kong's third official language, and while almost everyone speaks Cantonese primarily, there are no problems getting things done in Hong Kong while speaking English or Mandarin. Between the legitimization of Cantonese culture and the improving standards of living, Hong Kong's pop culture started to take shape. Hong Kong's aspiring singers were inspired by a Beatles visit in 1965, and started covering famous Western pop stars at first, before developing their own style, Cantopop, in the following decades. |
