Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea (MNAC), Lisbon, Portugal Materials :Bronze BIOGRAPHY Simões de Almeida Tio, assim denominado e conhecido para se distinguir do seu sobrinho homónimo, também escultor. Ingressa como aprendiz no Arsenal do Exército, onde seu pai era chefe da oficina de fundição de ferro. Aí familiariza-se com as técnicas da fundição, das moldagens e das práticas oficinais. Aos 12 anos transita para a secção de entalhamento, onde revela aptidões que o levarão a frequentar a cadeira de Desenho na Academia de Belas-Artes de Lisboa, em 1860. Em 1865 parte para Paris como bolseiro de Escultura e frequenta as lições de Jouffroy (na Escola Imperial de Belas-Artes), participa em exposições, recebe prémios e distinções e trabalha com escultores consagrados ( Jovem Grego, medalha de bronze na Exposição Internacional de Madrid de 1871). Após breve estada em Portugal, em 1870 parte para Roma, onde conhece Giulio Monteverde, escultor italiano naturalista. Em Fevereiro de 1872 regressa a Portugal e no mês seguinte é reconhecido como Académico de Mérito. Nesse ano, assume interinamente a docência de Desenho na Academia de Belas-Artes de Lisboa, tornando-se professor efectivo a partir de 1881. As suas esculturas aliam o interesse pela temática romântica (D. Sebastião, D. Inês de Castro, Camões) ao gosto pelo academismo formal e pelo espírito clássico dominado por formas, proporções, gestos e poses idealizados (Puberdade, Superstição), enunciando uma estética naturalista que se revela no tratamento da textura e consequente claro-escuro (retratos e bustos).
