Object history Provenance: Collection Boulanger de Boisfremont ; collection Pierre Jourdan. — Il est possible que le modèle soit Marguerite, qui posa à différentes reprises pour Prud’hon. Elle était célèbre pour sa beauté mais également pour ses frisettes réalisées grâce à des papillotes. Elle aurait posé pour L’Innocence (voir le catalogue de l’exposition Prud’hon le rêve de bonheur, Paris, Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, 1997 – 1998, n° 41, reproduit). Elle a posé pour de nombreuses académies (voir Op. cité supra, n° 189, reproduit). La voyant dans l’atelier de Prud’hon, le roi de Prusse lui donna mille francs pour ses papillotes.
