Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Prototype bouncing bomb. Developed by Barnes Wallis, bouncing bombs were used in the famous Dambusters raid on the Ruhr, carried out by 617 Squadron of the RAF on 16th May 1943 (for history of the operation and photo of a complete bomb, see The Dambusters website http://www.thedambusters.org.uk/developing_upkeep.html ).

This prototype was filled with concrete rather than explosives. The remains were recovered in 1996 from Reculver beach, Kent, where the bombs were test dropped in April 1943.

The bomb is displayed in the NAAFI tearoom building at Dover Castle, alongside a much older weapon 545574 .
