Description

These preserved wall sections, as seen on the uptown platform at the Columbus Circle station on the original 1904 IRT line (today it is served by the No. 1 train), show prototypical tiled wall patterns for use in New York City subways. These tiles were made by American Encaustic Tiling, but none of these patterns were actually used.

For about a century, these prototype sections stayed hidden behind the actual tiled wall at this platform. But during the recent renovations at this station that required removal of the old tiled wall, these prototype sections, long thought lost, were rediscovered, and now they are preserved for posterity.
