Description

Protée, le monstre marin ou la divinité marine aux armes de la famille Orsini Protée est, dans la mythologie grecque, le fils de Poséidon (Neptune) et de Téthys, il avait la garde des troupeaux d'animaux marins (berger de la mer). Il pouvait se métamorphoser en animal ou dans un des éléments.

Le parc des Monstres (appelé aussi Bois sacré ou Villa des Merveilles) a été conçu par le grand architecte Pirro Ligorio en 1552 à la demande du prince Vicino Orsini, le seigneur de Bomarzo.

Il est situé au pied du mont Cimino (dans le Latium, à une vingtaine de kilomètres de Viterbe) dans un vallon parcouru par un torrent.

Le parc a inspiré de nombreux artistes, notamment surréalistes mais également Niki de Saint Phalle qui a réalisé son Jardin des Tarots à moins de cent kilomètres de distance.
