Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Standing in the shadows of the newly sprouted high-rises of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus just north of downtown Buffalo, New York (the John R. Oishei Children's Hospital and the main building of Buffalo General Hospital rise in the background; the University at Buffalo Medical School is just beyond the left-hand margin) are the roughly half-dozen brick houses that make up the proposed Washington-Ellicott Streets Residential Historic District, which were declared eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014 yet remain to be inducted. Built mainly in the mid- to late 19th century and representing historic styles such as Italianate and Queen Anne that stand in stark contrast to the ultramodern design of their neighbors, these buildings echo a wholly different era in the history of the neighborhood, which at the time of their construction was a well-to-do residential area populated mainly by German-Americans (nearby North Oak Street was popularly known as the "Delaware Avenue of the East Side"). The neighborhood thrived until the 1950s, when it was earmarked for urban renewal by Mayor Frank Sedita with the goal of accommodating expansion of the hospital facilities; these buildings are among the last remnants.
