Selon Jean-Michel Nectoux (Jean Carriès, Paris musées, 2008, p. 139), Winnaretta Singer, artiste, mécène et fervente wagnérienne, a voulu faire construire une arche triomphale pour le salon de musique de l'hôtel particulier, 3 rue Cortambert, à Paris, qu'elle faisait aménager en 1890. Cet hôtel comprenait un atelier de peinture et un salon de musique dans lequel, la princesse espérait, semble-t-il, un jour présenter le manuscrit de Parsifal en contre-partie de ses aides à la famille Wagner. L'artiste Jean Carriès dont de nombreuses oeuvres réalisées pour ce projet, sont conservées au musée du Petit Palais à Paris, mourra en 1894 avant de terminer son projet de "Porte de Parsifal". www.singer-polignac.org/fr/lafondation/historique/l-hotel...
En mars 1890, Carriès reçoit la commande d'un encadrement de porte gigantesque en carreaux de grès, séparant en deux l’atelier de peinture de la richissime américaine Winnaretta Singer, future princesse Edmond de Polignac. Celle-ci avait accepté ce projet de "Porte monumentale" après avoir vu une aquarelle de présentation par Eugène Grasset, ami du sculpteur. A la mort de Carriès en 1894, il a achevé la maquette en plâtre grandeur nature mais n’a pu faire aboutir la création de l’ensemble des grès. Il n'existe donc aujourd'hui qu’à peine un tiers des 600 pièces initialement prévues.
