he provinciallunatic-asylum at Nietleben, which is situated on the oppositewestern side of the valley, at a distance of four kilometresfrom Halle, also stands on such a porphyry knoll. At thefoot of the latter flows an arm of the Saale, called theWild Saale. The Nietleben porphyry knoll rises 30 metresabove the mean level of the Saale. It is connected with thealmost equally high ground behind it by a narrow ridge,corresponding in the.plan (diagram 3) to the road whichruns from building 18 westwards past a barn. The knollslopes towards the two sides where the sewage-fields aremarked in the plan ; towards the river it ends in a pretty steepslope, at the foot of which lies the pumping-station. On thislatter side it is not bounded by a regular curve, but has twoshort spurs, on one of which (going almost due eastwards)stand pavilions 29, 30, and 31, on the other (going south-wards) pavilions 32, 33, and 34.
