sted by transporting the road-building machinery free, and the machinery has been furnished by certain road-machinecompanies; so you will see that we have here cooperation all alongthe line. We didnot expect to be able to accomplish the entire result of building this road from Char-lottesville to the gates at Monticello, but we did expect to locate and begin it so thatit will be possible to complete it in the most admirable way. We did expect to givean example of road construction, and we did expect that there would be sufficiententhusiasm aroused here to secure the completion of the road. I am greatly encour-aged by what I see. I am ready to.believe that the results will be more beneficialthan almost any of us expected. We hope that in the course of time a new .memorial bridge, costing not less than$10,000, will be built at Moores Creek (figs. 1 and 2). We hope and expect that amagnificent fountain will be erected at the roadside where the old drinking place 13216—No. 25—03- 2 18

19 used to be and where the fountain still gushes forth (PL II, fig. 2). And, finally, wehope to have a sort of triumphal arch at the close (fig. 1). All of these, however, willbe ornamental in their nature and none of them essential to the utility of this road.I think there is no doubt that we shall be able to raise sufficient money to make thenecessary improvement within a short time; and these ornamental features, I believe,will come through the help of friends. I will remind you again of the fact that the General Government did, very earlyin the history of the country, make very large appropriations to pay the entire costof building a number of highways, and notably the great national road from Cum-berland, Md., west through Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois to St. Louis. That is thelongest straight road ever built by any government in the world. It cost about$7,000,000 and is 700 miles in length, making it cost about $10,000 per mile.
