Title
Probably Post Medieval Brothel Token
Description
English: A cast probably lead alloy circular brothel token, probably Post Medieval or early Modern in date, c. 1500-1800 AD. The obverse of the token depicts an erotic scene consisting of a crouching male figure with exaggerated phallus engaging a female figure from behind. Below the feet of the female there is a round, possibly spherical object. There are raised lines around the female figure, possibly indicating that the figures were laying on a bed, instead of standing. Above both figures there is a small hole, which seems to have been punched through to the other side, although this is uncertain due to the poor corroded state of the reverse. It is possible that the reverse had further decoration, but this is now missing. The perimeter edges are in extremely poor condition, with additional fragments crumbling during handling. The decorated surface has been treated with a translucent glossy substance after discovery. The token measures 29.16 mm long, 28.53 mm wide, 4.32 mm thick and weighs 16.32 grams. This object is listed as a Find of Note by the Finds Liaison Officer for its rarity on the database.
