Title
Probable Roman steelyard weight
Description
English: A lead alloy steelyard weight which may be from the Roman period. The weight is sub-spherical, with a flattened base and a slightly pointed top. An iron loop projects from the top. It is 50mm long, and 47.4mm in diameter. The surface of the weight is pitted. It is mid-grey in colour, with patches of white corrosion, but the appearance has been altered by cleaning and varnishing. The weight has a mass of 531g which is roughly equivalent to one and a half Roman pounds.
