Title
Probable Roman ear ring
Description
English: Probable Roman ear-ring; Cast penannular ring of copper alloy with remains of gilding. The ring has a sub-circular cross-section and tapers to a point at either end. There are traces of gilding in places across the surface of the ring, suggesting that it was originally completely gilt.

Objects of this shape are quite common finds from Roman contexts and are usually interpreted as earrings. Similar objects have, however, also been found from later, Early Medieval contexts. They too have been most commonly identified as earrings.

Width (side to side) 24.8mm, height 22.5mm, thickness 4.7mm, weight 3.85g
