Title
Probable Roman copper alloy coiled finger ring
Description
English: A coiled copper alloy finger ring of probable Roman date, probably dating to c. 43-410. The ring consists of a narrow strip of copper alloy, 3.8mm wide and 2.0mm thick coiled around itself twice; sub-rectangular in cross-section and terminating in a worn break at one end tapering into a rounded point at the other. The finger ring has now been slightly deformed.

Dimensions: across hoop 18.4mm; width 7.8mm; thickness 2.1mm; weight 3.61g.

Although largely undiagnostic the ring is from a site producing large amounts of Roman material and a similar date range can be assumed likely in this case. Similar finger rings are published from Colchester (Crummy 1983: 48, no. 1758; unstratified) and Dorchester (Woodward et al. 1993: 120, no. 22; Late 1st/early 2nd). Similar rings were also found during excavations at Meare Village (Coles 1987: 67, E18-19), with potential Iron Age features identified through Geophysical survey within the vicinity of the find.
