Title |
Probable Roman: Ear ring |
||
Description |
English: A complete composite gold Earring of probable Post Medieval to Modern dating (AD 1800 to AD 1900).
The ear ring comprises two separate parts: a pendant / decorative element and the wire section to suspend it from the ear. The wire part consists of a circular sectioned recurved piece of wire, terminating in an globular knop. The wire has a diameter of 0.83 mm. The pendant / decorative element comprises a circular openwork disc. At the centre of the disc, a coil of twisted gold wire is present, in a squashed domed shape. Radiating out from this centre are twelve heart shaped petals, which are fixed to a plain gold border by gold spheres soldered together. A slight dent is present in the border. The reverse is plain and undecorated. The ear ring has an overall length of 24.22 mm. The decorative element has a diameter of 15.02 mm and is 3.43 mm thick. It weighs 1.4 g. This ear ring was initially identified as being Roman in dating, due to the filigree work, however on closer examination by Richard Hobbs (Curator of Romano-British Collections, British Museum), identified that the wire has been drawn, indicating that this ear ring was not of Roman but of Victorian dating. Judy Rudoe (Curator of Nineteenth & Twentieth collections, British Museum) has confirmed the Victorian dating. |
