be the act. Afew, who had a little meal, made an attack on the fence,got a little wood, and made mush. About five oclock itbegan to rain, a regular South Carolina shower, and con-tinued until about eleven that evening. Not one of ushad a particle of shelter, and were consequently drenchedto the skin. The night turned cold, and, without fires, itwas any thing but agreeable. But it was no use to re-pine; so, in the midst of the rain, a number of us collect-ed together at the point nearest the depot, and sung, lust-ily, Bally round the Flag,7 The Star-spangled Ban-ner, Bed, White, and Blue, and other patriotic pieces,for the benefit of a crowd of our secesh friends, whohad gathered in the building opposite to look upon thehated Yankee prisoners. For once, at least, Columbiahad loyal men and patriotic singing in her midst. As the rain continued, the ground was flooded, till, insome places, it was ankle deep. Sleep and rest were out ofthe question, as we were obliged to walk to keep warm.

While waiting here, a Lieutenant Parker was broughtin, who had escaped from the train on its way fromCharleston to Columbia. He had been recaptured, withothers, by the blood-hounds. He was badly torn bythem, and was so weak he could scarcely stand up. Hewas taken to the hospital that night, where he died thenext day from his wounds—a sacrifice to Southern chiv-alry. While we were thus waiting, Captain Semple cameamong us, and asked us to take a parole not to escape,same as we had in Charleston, representing that he hada fine camp for us about two miles from the city; thatwe should have the largest freedom that could possiblybe allowed; should be supplied with good comfortabletents for sh
