Notes |
See the related preparatory drawing (Gg,2.233; Hind 4). For a finished and lettered impression as published by Martin van den Enden, see S.6204. Rowlands, Rubens: Drawings and Sketches, BMP 1977, cat.169 This working proof, which lacks any engraved background detail, has been worked on by Pontius in black chalk with light grey wash, strengthened in a few places with white bodycolour. It gives us a clear indication of the quality of Pontius's draughtsmanship in the preparation of his engravings. It further strongly supports the view that the first draught in such drawings as 'The Descent of the Holy Spirit' (1994,0514.38) was his responsibility and that the subsequent reworking is likely to be by Rubens. The sitter, a pupil of Jan Brueghel and a member of the Society of Jesus, specialized in painting flower pictures, with frequently a cartouche around a subject such as a 'Pietà' or Virgin and Child. Examples of his work in this country are in the Dulwich College Art Gallery, the Ellesmere-Sutherland Collection, and in Stonyhurst College, Lancashire. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
