There are incongruities in attributing the different states. The print corresponds to Dodgson's description of the first state and to Hollstein's second state (with cut l side and with inscription on the banderole). Koepplin and Falk agree with Hollstein and regard the impressions without inscription as the early state. Two other impressions of the two different states are extant at the BM. First appearance of the Saxon shields in Cranach's works. As the presence of St Roch and Sebastian indicate, the print was associated with protection from the plague.
