Notes |
There are incongruities in attributing the different states. Described as second state in Dodgson; the print corresponds to Hollstein's first state (with intact l side and without inscription on the banderole). Koepplin and Falk agree with Hollstein and regard the impressions without inscription as the early state. A second impression of this state and an impression of the first state are extant at the BM. As the presence of St Roch and Sebastian indicate, the print was associted with protection from the plague. The Saxon coat of arms appear here for the first time in Cranach's work. cf D. Koepplin and T. Falk, Lucas Cranach: Gemälde - Zeichnungen - Graphik', 2 vols, exh. cat. Kunstmuseum Basel, 1974, no. 7. Text From M. P. McDonald, Ferdinand Columbus: Renaissance Collector, British Museum, London, 2005: 'An image of unrelentingly orthodox character this print is one of Cranach's most elaborate religious images. It is the first devotional print to which Cranach paid special care in its execution. The composition is well balanced and the details beautifully cut. Cranach often locates his religious subjects in terrestrial settings that give the appearance of topographical accuracy. The buildings shown here cannot be identified but were possibly a significant residence or monastery near Wittenberg where he worked.' |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. ![]() |
