Notes |
For a proof before lettering, see 1858,0417.1224. Rubens was paid 20 florins for supplying the drawing; Galle was paid 75 florins on 5 April 1622 for engraving the plate. The copper-plate remains in the Plantin-Moretus Museum, Antwerp. For an impression of the frontispiece of the third volume see also 1858,0417.1222. For an impression of a anonymous copy published in 1625 see 1891,0414.1031. The drawing by Rubens for this plate is now in the BM (1895,0915.1058, Hind 38; J. Rowlands, 'Rubens: Drawings and Sketches', British Museum ex.cat. 1977, no.216). Lit.: J.Richard Judson and C. Van de Velde, 'Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, Book illustrations and title-pages', XXI, London 1978, no. 51. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
