A reversed earlier version of the stout man, with some alterations, is annotated 'Bubb Doddington' in ink (1868,0808.4105) with the date 1757.

The figures are copied from a print called: 'The Recruiting Sergeant, or Britanniais Happy Prospect, 1756' by Lord Townshend.
