English: Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1875)
Principles of Geology or the Modern Changes of the Earth and Its Inhabitants. (9th ed; copy 1860) D. Appleton and Company, 834 pp. Library of Congress control no.: 05015492 OCLC Number: 8293578 First Published as Principles of geology: being an inquiry how far the former changes of the earth's surface are referable to causes now in operation.1832. Through his career, Charles Lyell revised his opus to reflect the most recent understanding of the principles of modern geology. He heavily updated this 1860 edition, and described it “new and entirely revised edition.” Before he started his journey on the HMS Beagle in 1831, Charles Darwin received a copy of Lyell’s Principles Volume I as a gift from the ship’s captain, Robert FitzRoy. Lyell’s influence first caused young Charles to consider unimaginably long stretches of times. Later on the journey, Darwin received volume II from Lyell. That second volume described Lamarck’s theory of evolution, which Lyell rejected. Instead, Lyell championed a concept of various centers of evolution as an explanation to local variations. Lyell became a friend of the young Darwin. Despite his personal rejection of evolution, Lyell urged Darwin to publish an excerpt from his work along side a paper by Alfred Wallace. That publication, which introduced Darwin’s concept of evolution by means of natural selection, forever, linked Darwin’s name with the concept of natural selection.
