And then, forthe first time, the stillness is broken by threecheers for 9— ! a challenge and defiance to theSophomores. It is not a very good cheer; it isragged and rough, and runs down at the endlike an exhausted bag-pipe. But never mind,they mean it, and it is the old cheer. Theywill soon learn it better; they will ring it outwith passionate enthusiasm in the criticalmoments of great games. It will proclaim thejoy of many a victory, and when, after fouryears cheering, with depleted ranks theystand for the last time on the steps of OldNassau at the close of the last Senior singing,they will express their undying devotion toclass and Alma Mater by a deep and soberchorus in that best of college cheers: Rah!Rah ! Rah ! Tiger ! Sis ! Boom ! Ah ! Prince-ton ! We have forgotten our Freshmen again ; butthe Juniors have been taking good care ofthem. By this time they are marching around

The column headsfor the front campus gate, and a thrill of pleas-ure or fear runs down every spine as the sharp,clear-cut Sophomore cheer announces that theopposing forces are coming to dispute entrance.This is usually the signal for Mat. Goldie tostep in and say : Gentlemen, if there is a rush,every man in it will leave college to-mori-ow.Sometimes this is effective, but the blood of 9—is generally too warm to be cooled by the Proc-tors eloquence. The Juniors pull their hatsover their eyes and move among the Freshmen,suggesting that Mat. dont know them any-how. A short parley, and then, with a fierceshout, at it they go.
