Deutsch: Prince Philip (rechts) wartet auf Flugplatz Giebelstadt auf seine Reisemaschine - vermutlich eine De Havilland Devon - für den Rückflug nach London, am 02.12.1958. Hier im Gespräch mit zwei Offizieren der US Air Force Europe, Standort Giebelstadt. (Fotokopie entstammt Erbe StOV (BW) Veitshöchheim, Ordner B, heute im Bestand des Marktgemeindearchives Giebelstadt).

Hinweise zu dem o.g. Flugzeugtyp De Havilland DH-104 Devon und den An- bzw. Abflugtagen des Prince Philip am/vom Flugplatz Giebelstadt in den 1950er Jahren: De Havilland DH.104 Dove, milit. Ausführung Devon C. Mk.2 des Royal Aircraft Establishment. Vermutlich wurde dieses Kurzstrecken-Transportflugzeug von Prinz Philip bei seinen insgesamt drei Flügen von und/oder nach Giebelstadt (USAF Air Base) zw. 1954 u. 1959 genutzt. Nachgewiesen sind lt. Meldungen der Ochsenfurter Zeitung, genaues Datum von Start u. Landung vom Ausgabedatum der Zeitung zurückdatiert:

  • Do., 24. Juni 1954: Landung einer von Prinz Philip selbst gesteuerten Maschine, Zeitpunkt und Flugplatz für den Rückflug ist (noch) unbekannt.
  • Di., 2. Dez. 1958 und So., 13. Dez. 1959: Start vom Flugplatz Giebelstadt zum Rückflug nach London, nach Besuch der Verwandten Prinz Philips in Baden-Württemberg, u.a. auf Schloss Langenburg im Altkreis Crailsheim. Der Zeitpunkt und Landeplatz der vorausgegangenen Ankunft in Deutschland ist (noch) unbekannt. Es ist ausserdem unbekannt, ob das Flugzeug an diesen Hin- & Rückflugtagen von Prinz Philip selbst geflogen wurde.
Weitere Detailinformationen - insbes. hinsichtlich der in diesem Zusammenhang genutzten 1- oder 2-motorigen englischen Reise- u. Transportflugzeuge konnten bisher nicht ermittelt werden.

Notes on the above-mentioned aircraft type De Havilland DH-104 Devon and the arrival and departure days of the Prince Philip at/from Giebelstadt airfield in the 1950s: De Havilland DH.104 Dove, milit. Devon C. Mk.2 version of the Royal Aircraft Establishment. This short-haul transport aircraft was presumably used by Prince Philip on his three flights from and/or to Giebelstadt (USAF Air Base) between 1954 and 1959. According to reports in the Ochsenfurter Zeitung, the exact dates of take-off and landing are backdated from the date of issue of the newspaper:

  • Thu, 24 June 1954: Landing of an aircraft piloted by Prince Philip himself, time and airfield for the return flight is (still) unknown.
  • Tue. 2 Dec. 1958 and Sun. 13 Dec. 1959: Take-off from Giebelstadt airfield for the return flight to London, after visiting Prince Philip's relatives in Baden-Württemberg, including at Langenburg Castle in the old district of Crailsheim. The time and landing site of the previous arrival in Germany is (still) unknown. It is also unknown whether the aircraft was flown by Prince Philip himself on these outward and return flights.
Further detailed information - especially with regard to the 1- or 2-engined English touring and transport aircraft used in this context - has not yet been found.
