t harborsin the world. It is the principal shipping-port of the GardenProvince, and has a thriving trade. This city is the easternterminus of the Plant Steamship Line, and it is a port of call forthe boats of the Quebec Steamship Company, plying betweenMontreal and Gulf of St. Lawrence Ports. The City ofGhent makes weekly round trips between here and Halifax,and there are several local lines. One of the healthiest townsin Canada, it is yearly becoming more desirable as a place ofresidence. A system of Water Works constructed in 1887-88,at a cost of $165,000, furnishes water that is unsurpassed inexcellence in America, pumped direct from a spring, and thereis a modern system of sewerage. The city is generously laidout, its streets being wide and many of them shaded, and itsfour public squares are well kept. Queen Square in the centre of the town is one of theprettiest open spaces in the Dominion. In summer it is avery attractive spot with its beautifully arranged flower beds. —53 —

—54—sparkling fountain and band stand. Many improvements havebeen made in Charlottetown in recent years, and it is graduallyassuming the appearance of a modern city. The woodenbuildings that served as business establishments a generationago have given place to brick and stone structures, and similarprogress is to be seen in the residential districts. The cityssurroundings are beautiful, and the suburbs are charming withgardens, groves and hedges of evergreen, with shaded roadsand fertile fields. Pleasant drives through pretty pastoralscenery, and enjoyable excursions on rivers and bay are amongthe attractions of Charlottetown. Horses for driving, sail androw boats can be hired at very cheap rates. One of the most beautiful spots and probably the placeof greatest historic interest on the Island is Warren Farm atRocky Point, nearly opposite the city and within a few minutestrip by ferry.
