Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Primitive morthouse, old Belhelvie Kirk Morthouses were used in the early 19th century to prevent bodies being stolen by graverobbers for sale to anatomy schools. The corpses were stored under lock and key until decomposed and then buried in the normal way. The morthouse at Belhelvie is a simple underground barrel-vault reached by a flight of stone stairs. The stout door is now missing. The vault was replaced by a much larger and more robust building in 1832.
