Text Appearing Before Image:
No. 61 PRIEST AND POACHER BY PROFESSOR L. KNAUS No, 61 PROFESSOR LUDWIG KNAUS GERMAN (1829- ) PRIEST AND POACHER The village priest, short and pursy, in his long frock coat and knee-breeches, his red handkerchief clasped behind his back, his hand upraised inprotestation, is giving a sound rating to a delinquent member of his flock, who, cap in hand, stands silently before him. A sturdy ruffian he is, over-topping his preceptor by a head, his legs bare, a sullen, shifty look in hiseyes. Obviously he is not laying his scolding much to heart. On the wallbehind is a large crucifix and an image of the Madonna, and through anopen door is a glimpse of a sunlit room, with a shelf of books, an inlaidbureau and a large painting hanging upon the wall. The glimpse of the lifeof a priest in a little German village is most instructive. Signed at the loner left, L. Knaus, 1864. Height, 32 inches; mdth, 28 inchet.
Text Appearing After Image:
No. 62GERMAN LANDSCAPE BY B. C. KOEKKOEK No. 62 BAREND CORNELIS KOEKKOEK DUTCH (l 80S-1862) GERMAN LANDSCAPE A rough country road runs through the centre of the picture, bordering ashallow, grassy ravine upon the left, overshadowed by lofty trees. A fewpeasants slowly wend their way homeward in the sunset, or stop to exchangegossip with acquaintances. Upon the left a craggy mass of rock juts abruptlyto the sky, topped by the roofs and towers of a lofty castle, the hills descend-ing gradually, peak after peak, to the distant horizon. On the right are thehouses of a small town, lying beside a peaceful river, whose waters meanderin many curves through the landscape. The sky is covered by masses ofgray cloud, from behind which the setting sun streams across the scene, throwing long shadows athwart the road and illumining the dusty hazewhich envelops the whole scene. Signed at Ihe loner right, B. C. Kokkkokk, 1852. Height, 29 inches; length, S7 inches.
