Description |
English: Presidio Chapel of San Elizario. Spanish troops built a presidio (fort) and chapel at this site during the 1780s to protect settlements in the lower Río Grande Valley downstream from El Paso, Texas. By 1846 the chapel was in ruins, so a new chapel was built in 1853. The village plaza, jail, and other historic adobe structures that reflect Spanish colonial settlement enhance the present chapel, built in 1877. It was dedicated to St. Elzear, a 13th-century French saint. A self-guided walking tour is available. Adjacent to San Elizario Catholic Church, a historical museum contains a number of historical exhibits. The chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places. San Elizario is a historic district.
